Significado al Derecho
The Devil looms over two figures chained to his pedestal, and the secret the image contains — the one the Devil himself would prefer you miss — is that the chains around their necks are loose. They could remove them. They have not. The Devil is the card of voluntary bondage: the compulsive patterns, addictions, and belief systems that we cling to with one part of ourselves even as another part recognizes them as prison.
When the Devil appears in your reading, something in your life is operating as a trap that you are cooperating with. This may be a relationship that has become mutually destructive, a financial situation anchored in fear-based choices, an addiction of any kind, or simply a story about yourself and what is possible for you that functions as a self-fulfilling prophecy.
The Devil does not capture his subjects by force — he offers them something they want, or something they fear losing, and the wanting/fearing does the work of the chains. This card is an invitation to look without flinching at what you are getting from the arrangement you currently cannot seem to leave. What does the cage provide that freedom threatens to remove?
This card carries shadow material: the parts of yourself you do not consciously identify with, the impulses you prefer not to acknowledge, the aspects of your behavior that you experience as happening to you rather than being chosen by you. The Devil asks for honesty that is genuinely uncomfortable.
Significado Invertido
The reversed Devil is one of the most liberating positions in the entire deck. The chains have been recognized, or the removal of them has already begun. Patterns that had you locked in compulsive repetition are loosening their grip. The veil is lifting.
This reversal marks the beginning of genuine freedom — the first steps of a process that may have started internally and has not yet fully manifested externally. The awareness is complete; the actual release is underway.
Celebrate this, and then do the work required to ensure the chains do not re-form in a different shape.

Simbolismo e Imágenes
The Devil figure is part man, part beast, part bat-winged demon — he is an inversion of the Hierophant, the perversion of sacred teaching into coercive institution. He stands on a half-cube, a half-formed understanding of material reality. The man and woman chained below him mirror the Lovers from card six, but their faces have turned away from heaven and toward the ground. Their tails are made of grapes and fire respectively — the seductions of pleasure and rage. Notably, their horns have grown since the Lovers card: complicity deepens the more we pretend it doesn't exist.
Energía Sí/No
The Devil carries NO energy — a powerful signal that the current situation involves unconscious patterns, fear-based decisions, or genuine entrapment that makes forward motion in the asked-about direction unwise. Examine what is truly holding you before proceeding.
Numerología y Correspondencias
Fifteen reduces to six (1+5) — echoing the Lovers card and revealing that the Devil is the shadow side of the sixth card's sacred choice. What the Lovers represents when chosen consciously, the Devil represents when it operates unconsciously. Fifteen is also the number of restriction in Qabalah. The Devil is ruled by Earth and Capricorn, the sign of material ambition, structural authority, and the potential for tremendous achievement that can tip into controlling or obsessive patterns.
En una Tirada
Amor
In love, the Devil signals a relationship with significant shadow dynamics — codependency, toxic attachment, power imbalance, or mutual reinforcement of patterns that keep both people small. It is not necessarily a call to leave, but it is an urgent call to become conscious of what is actually operating in the relationship.
Carrera
In career contexts, the Devil warns of golden-cage situations: lucrative work that is slowly consuming your soul, professional environments sustained by unhealthy competition or fear, or ambition that has become compulsive rather than genuinely fulfilling. What are you actually building, and for what?
Espiritual
Spiritually, the Devil is the shadow work card — the invitation to consciously encounter the aspects of yourself you have been projecting onto others, suppressing, or simply refusing to name. The spiritual path requires meeting the Devil; those who avoid it are perpetually shaped by what they will not see.
