What is a rising sign?
Your rising sign, also called the ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment and place you were born. Your Sun sign describes your core self and your Moon sign your emotional needs. The rising sign describes how you meet the world: your first impressions, your manner and the way you begin new things.
Because the Earth turns once a day, all twelve signs rise in turn, so the rising sign changes roughly every two hours. Two people born on the same day can share a Sun sign and have completely different rising signs. That’s why a birth chart calculator needs your time and place as well as your date.
The rising sign also sets up the houses. The first house begins at the ascendant and the other eleven follow around the chart, each linked to an area of life such as home, work or relationships. The house a planet falls in shows where its energy tends to play out for you.
Why your birth time matters
Your birth chart is a map of the sky for one minute in one place. The Sun moves about one degree a day, so a few hours make little difference to it. The Moon moves much faster and can change sign within a day. The rising sign and the houses move fastest of all: a few minutes can shift a house cusp, and around half an hour can change the rising sign itself.
We turn your local time into universal time using the time zone and daylight saving rules that applied where you were born on that date, including historical changes. Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?+
Not reliably. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so without a time several signs are possible. The calculator still shows your Sun, Moon and planet signs, which hold for the whole day, and tells you when the Moon could be in either of two signs.
How accurate is this birth chart calculator?+
In our checks against NASA JPL’s ephemeris, the planet positions agreed to within about one arcminute, far finer than a degree. The biggest source of error is the birth time you enter, so the more precise it is, the more you can rely on the rising sign and houses.
Which house system do you use?+
Placidus, the house system most widely used in modern Western astrology. Close to the poles Placidus cannot be calculated for some birth times. In that case we show the signs only and say so, rather than show houses that would be wrong.
